The MathHero app: a multiplication game for kids

How to Learn the 6 Times Table

Build the 6 times table from facts your child already knows. If the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s are familiar, turn those facts around: 6 × 4 is the same as 4 × 6. With 6 × 1 = 6, that leaves four facts to focus on: 6 × 6, 6 × 7, 6 × 8 and 6 × 9.

Use the 5s, then add one more group

Six groups are five groups plus one group. For 6 × 8, start with 5 × 8 = 40 and add another 8: 40 + 8 = 48. For 6 × 7, use 35 + 7 = 42. The extra amount is the number in each group, so it changes with the question.

6 × 8 the 5s 5 × 8 = 40 + one more group + 8 40 + 8 = 48
Five rows of 8 make 40. One more row adds 8: 6 × 8 = 40 + 8 = 48.

Double the 3 times table

Six groups are twice as many as three groups. If 3 × 6 = 18, then 6 × 6 is double 18: 36. If 3 × 8 = 24, double 24 to get 48. Let your child choose whichever strategy feels easier.

Use 60 to find 6 × 9

Ten sixes make 60. Nine sixes are one six less: 6 × 9 = 60 − 6 = 54. This is quicker than counting all the way up from 6.

Count in sixes, then mix the facts

Use groups of six counters or six-egg cartons: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60. Once your child can explain the pattern, ask the facts in a different order. Try 6 × 8, then 6 × 3, then 6 × 6, so the answer does not depend on reciting the whole table.

Common mistakes

  • Adding 6 instead of one more group. For 6 × 8, 5 × 8 + 6 gives 46. The missing group has 8, so use 40 + 8 = 48.
  • Mixing up 6 × 8 and 6 × 9. Anchor them to facts you know: 6 × 8 = 40 + 8 = 48; 6 × 9 = 60 − 6 = 54. All 6s answers are even, but that alone does not prove an answer is right.

6 Multiplication Table Games: Common Questions

What are the best free games for the 6 times table?

Good 6 times table games make your child answer 6s facts again and again while something fun happens. On this page, free MathHero games such as Slime Battle, Wacky Racing and Delivery Service use only 6 times table questions, from 6 × 1 to 6 × 10. They play in the browser with no account, no download and no ads.

How do the MathHero 6 times table games work?

Each MathHero game on this page plays in its own way, and every one is a short adventure with several levels. In all of them, the questions are 6 times table facts from 6 × 1 to 6 × 10, and the other way around, like 3 × 6. Your child taps one of the answers, and every right answer moves the adventure forward.

How can my child practice the 6 times table?

Start with the 5 times table and add one more group: 6 × 8 = 5 × 8 + 8 = 40 + 8 = 48. Or double a 3 times table fact: 3 × 8 = 24, so 6 × 8 = 48. Use counters or a dot array to explain the strategy, then practice a few facts in mixed order. The MathHero games on this page practice 6 × 1 to 6 × 10.

What grade learns the 6 times table?

In the US, the 6 times table is a 3rd grade skill, usually learned at ages 8-9. Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects children to know all one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, from memory by the end of grade 3. In England, the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables are a Year 4 objective, at ages 8-9, and part of the Year 4 multiplication tables check. The MathHero games on this page practice 6 × 1 to 6 × 10.

Are MathHero's 6 times table games free?

Yes. The MathHero 6 times table games on this page are free to play in your browser, with no account, no download and no ads. The MathHero app is a separate, fuller game: it is free at 5 levels a day, and a subscription with a 7-day free trial removes the daily limit.

Do the 6 times table games work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. The MathHero 6 times table games run in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone, tapping an adventure opens it full screen; turn the phone sideways to play. Your child answers by tapping one of the choices, so no keyboard is needed. The games need an internet connection to load.

Can my child practice only the 6s and 9s?

On this page, every question is a 6 times table fact. To mix tables, use the MathHero app: Custom Practice lets a parent pick individual times tables from ×1 to ×12, for example only ×6 and ×9, and choose typed answers or multiple choice. Each child profile keeps its own settings, so siblings can practice different tables.

How long should kids practice the 6 times table each day?

Short, regular practice works best for times tables: about 10-15 minutes on most days beats one long session a week. A round of a MathHero 6 times table game fits that well. Stop while your child still wants to play, and come back to the facts they missed the next day.
