How to Learn the 4 Times Table

To learn the 4 times table, start from the multiplication facts your child already knows, use the link between the 2s and the 4s for the rest, then practice until the answers come from memory. Most children reach the 4s already knowing the 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s, and those facts work both ways: 4 × 3 is 3 × 4, and 4 × 5 is 5 × 4. Add 4 × 1 = 4, and half the table is done. Only five facts are new: 4 × 4, 4 × 6, 4 × 7, 4 × 8 and 4 × 9.

It is the 2s, doubled

Four groups are twice as many as two groups. Any 4 times table fact is the matching 2 times table fact doubled: because 2 × 6 = 12, 4 × 6 is double 12, which is 24. Because 2 × 8 = 16, 4 × 8 is double 16, which is 32.

Take one 4 away from 40

4 × 9 is one four less than 4 × 10, so start from 40 and take 4 away: 40 − 4 = 36.

Every answer is even

Every multiple of 4 is an even number, and the last digits repeat in a five-step cycle: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 (4, 8, 12, 16, 20), then 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 again (24, 28, 32, 36, 40). If your child lands on an odd number like 27, they know right away to check again.

Count in wheels and legs

Cars have 4 wheels, chairs and dogs have 4 legs, and a square has 4 sides: 3 cars have 12 wheels, 6 chairs have 24 legs, and 8 dogs have 32 legs. Counting in fours like this, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, shows how the table grows. Treat it as a step: counting up from 4 every time is slow, and the goal is recall.

The Double-Double Trick for the 4 Times Table

To multiply any number by 4, double it once and then double the result. It turns every new 4s fact into two quick additions your child can do in their head.

  1. Start with the number you are multiplying by 4: for 4 × 7, start with 7.
  2. Double it to get 2 × 7: 7 + 7 = 14.
  3. Double that answer to get 4 × 7: 14 + 14 = 28.
4 × 7: double, then double again1 × 77double× 22 × 77 + 714double× 24 × 714 + 14287 → 14 → 28, so 4 × 7 = 28
Doubling 7 gives 14 (two groups of 7), and doubling 14 gives 28 (four groups of 7). For 4 × 6, the same steps give 6 → 12 → 24.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping after one double. A child using the double-double strategy can double 7 to get 14 and give 14 as the answer to 4 × 7. Remind them that 14 is 2 × 7, and they need one more double to reach 4 × 7 = 28.
  • Mixing up 4 × 6 = 24 and 4 × 7 = 28. Both answers sit in the twenties. Anchor on 4 × 5 = 20 and add one four for 4 × 6 = 24, or two fours (8) for 4 × 7 = 28.
  • 36 instead of 32 for 4 × 8. 36 is 4 × 9. To check 4 × 8, double 8 to get 16, then double 16 to get 32.

4 Multiplication Table Games: Common Questions

What are the best free games for the 4 times table?

Good 4 times table games make your child answer 4s facts again and again while something fun happens. On this page, free MathHero games such as Slime Battle, Wacky Racing and Delivery Service use only 4 times table questions, from 4 × 1 to 4 × 10. They play in the browser with no account, no download and no ads.

How do the MathHero 4 times table games work?

Each MathHero game on this page plays in its own way, and every one is a short adventure with several levels. In all of them, the questions are 4 times table facts from 4 × 1 to 4 × 10, and the other way around, like 3 × 4. Your child taps one of the answers, and every right answer moves the adventure forward.

How can my child practice the 4 times table?

Start from what your child already knows. After the 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s, only five 4s facts are new: 4 × 4, 4 × 6, 4 × 7, 4 × 8 and 4 × 9. Cover them with the double-double strategy (for 4 × 7, double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28) or take one 4 away from 40 (4 × 9 = 40 − 4 = 36), and practice a little most days. The MathHero games on this page give quick, repeated practice on 4 × 1 to 4 × 10.

What grade learns the 4 times table?

In the US, the 4 times table is a 3rd grade skill, usually learned at ages 8-9. Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects children to know all one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, from memory by the end of grade 3. In England, the 3, 4 and 8 times tables are a Year 3 objective (ages 7-8), and all tables up to 12 are in the Year 4 multiplication tables check. The MathHero games on this page practice 4 × 1 to 4 × 10.

Are MathHero's 4 times table games free?

Yes. The MathHero 4 times table games on this page are free to play in your browser, with no account, no download and no ads. The MathHero app is a separate, fuller game: it is free at 5 levels a day, and a subscription with a 7-day free trial removes the daily limit.

Do the 4 times table games work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. The MathHero 4 times table games run in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone, tapping an adventure opens it full screen; turn the phone sideways to play. Your child answers by tapping one of the choices, so no keyboard is needed. The games need an internet connection to load.

Can my child practice only the 4s and 8s?

On this page, every question is a 4 times table fact. To mix tables, use the MathHero app: Custom Practice lets a parent pick individual times tables from ×1 to ×12, for example only ×4 and ×8, and choose typed answers or multiple choice. Each child profile keeps its own settings, so siblings can practice different tables.

How long should kids practice the 4 times table each day?

Short, regular practice works best for times tables: about 10-15 minutes on most days beats one long session a week. A round of a MathHero 4 times table game fits that well. Stop while your child still wants to play, and come back to the facts they missed the next day.
