How to Learn the 11 Times Table

To learn the 11 times table, start with the facts up to 11 × 9, which follow one simple pattern, then learn the last three on their own. Many of the 11s also come from tables your child already knows: 11 × 3 is 3 × 11. The facts to watch are 11 × 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132.

Write the digit twice, up to 11 × 9

From 11 × 1 to 11 × 9, the answer is the number written twice: 11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 7 = 77, 11 × 9 = 99. It is the quickest pattern in any times table. It stops at 11 × 9, which is why the last three facts need their own practice.

The 11 Times Table as Ten Groups Plus One

Eleven groups are ten groups plus one more group. That works for every fact, including the ones the pattern does not cover: 11 × 7 = 70 + 7 = 77, 11 × 10 = 100 + 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 110 + 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132.

11 × 7 7777777777 + 7 ten groups: 10 × 7 = 70 + 7 70 + 7 = 77
Ten blue groups of 7 make 70, and one more orange group adds 7. The same step gives 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132.

Learn the last three by name

11 × 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132 break the repeat pattern, so say them out loud until they stick. 121 is 11 × 11, and its digits read the same both ways. Each step up the table adds 11: 110, then 121, then 132.

Count in elevens

11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132. Up to 99, both digits go up by one each step. Treat counting as a step: counting up to 11 × 12 every time is slow, and the goal is recall.

Common mistakes

  • 111 for 11 × 11, or 1010 for 11 × 10. Writing the digit twice only works up to 11 × 9. Use ten groups plus one instead: 11 × 10 = 110 and 11 × 11 = 110 + 11 = 121.
  • Mixing up 121 and 132. 11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132. To check, start from 121 and add one more 11: 121 + 11 = 132.
  • Adding instead of multiplying. 11 × 3 is not 14. 11 × 3 means three elevens: 11 + 11 + 11 = 33.

What Grade Learns the 11 Times Table?

The 11 times table goes beyond the core US facts. Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects children to know all one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, from memory by the end of grade 3, and some classes add the 11s and 12s in grades 3-4, usually at ages 8-10. In England, the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables are a Year 4 objective, at ages 8-9, and all tables up to 12 × 12 are part of the Year 4 multiplication tables check.

11 Times Table Games: Common Questions

What are the best free games for the 11 times table?

Good 11 times table games make your child answer 11s facts again and again while something fun happens. On this page, free MathHero games such as Slime Battle, Wacky Racing and Delivery Service use only 11 times table questions, from 11 × 1 to 11 × 12. They play in the browser with no account, no download and no ads.

How do the MathHero 11 times table games work?

Each MathHero game on this page plays in its own way, and every one is a short adventure with several levels. In all of them, the questions are 11 times table facts from 11 × 1 to 11 × 12, and the other way around, like 7 × 11. Your child taps one of the answers, and every right answer moves the adventure forward.

How can my child practice the 11 times table?

Up to 11 × 9, the answer is the digit written twice: 11 × 4 = 44 and 11 × 7 = 77. For 11 × 10, 11 × 11 and 11 × 12, use ten groups plus one more group: 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132. Practice those last three by name, a little most days. The MathHero games on this page give quick, repeated practice on 11 × 1 to 11 × 12.

What grade learns the 11 times table?

Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects US children to know the one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, by the end of grade 3, so the 11s are an extra that some classes add in grades 3-4, usually at ages 8-10. In England, the 11 times table is a Year 4 objective and part of the multiplication tables check. The MathHero games on this page practice 11 × 1 to 11 × 12.

Are MathHero's 11 times table games free?

Yes. The MathHero 11 times table games on this page are free to play in your browser, with no account, no download and no ads. The MathHero app is a separate, fuller game: it is free at 5 levels a day, and a subscription with a 7-day free trial removes the daily limit.

Do the 11 times table games work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. The MathHero 11 times table games run in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone, tapping an adventure opens it full screen; turn the phone sideways to play. Your child answers by tapping one of the choices, so no keyboard is needed. The games need an internet connection to load.

Can my child practice only the 11s and 12s?

On this page, every question is an 11 times table fact. To mix tables, open the multiplication games and pick the tables before the first level, for example only ×11 and ×12. In the MathHero app, Custom Practice does the same from ×1 to ×12 and adds typed answers or multiple choice, with settings for each child.

How long should kids practice the 11 times table each day?

Short, regular practice works best for times tables: about 10-15 minutes on most days beats one long session a week. A round of a MathHero 11 times table game fits that well. Stop while your child still wants to play, and come back to the facts they missed the next day.
