How to Learn the 12 Times Table

To learn the 12 times table, build each fact from two tables your child already knows, the 10s and the 2s, then practice until the answers come from memory. Many of the 12s also come from other tables both ways: 12 × 5 is 5 × 12. The facts to watch are 12 × 7 = 84, 12 × 8 = 96, 12 × 9 = 108, 12 × 11 = 132 and 12 × 12 = 144.

The 12 Times Table as 10s Plus 2s

Twelve groups are ten groups plus two groups. For 12 × 7, add 10 × 7 and 2 × 7: 70 + 14 = 84. It works for every fact: 12 × 8 = 80 + 16 = 96, 12 × 9 = 90 + 18 = 108 and 12 × 12 = 120 + 24 = 144. In an area model, the split shows up as two boxes side by side.

12 × 7 10 2 7 70 10 × 7 = 70 2 × 7 = 14 70 + 14 = 84
Seven rows of 12 split into 10 blue columns and 2 orange columns: 70 + 14 = 84. The same split gives 12 × 12 = 120 + 24 = 144.

Double the 6s

12 is double 6, so every 12s answer is double the matching 6s answer. 6 × 8 = 48, so 12 × 8 = 96, and 6 × 9 = 54, so 12 × 9 = 108.

Count in dozens

12 is a dozen: eggs in a carton, months in a year, hours on a clock face. 3 dozen eggs are 36, 4 years are 48 months, and 12 dozen, 12 × 12, is 144, a number also called a gross.

Count in twelves

12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 132, 144. Every answer is even, and the ones digits repeat 2, 4, 6, 8, 0. Treat counting as a step: counting up to 12 × 9 every time is slow, and the goal is recall.

Common mistakes

  • 124 for 12 × 12. The digits of 144 get mixed up with 12. Split it: 12 × 12 = 120 + 24 = 144.
  • 94 or 98 for 12 × 8. Split it: 80 + 16 = 96. The ones digits also help: the 8th answer in the 12s ends in 6.
  • Forgetting the 2s part. 70 is only ten groups of 7, not twelve. Add the two missing groups, 2 × 7 = 14, to get 12 × 7 = 84.

What Grade Learns the 12 Times Table?

The 12 times table goes beyond the core US facts. Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects children to know all one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, from memory by the end of grade 3, and some classes add the 11s and 12s in grades 3-4, usually at ages 8-10. In England, the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables are a Year 4 objective, at ages 8-9, and all tables up to 12 × 12 are part of the Year 4 multiplication tables check.

12 Times Table Games: Common Questions

What are the best free games for the 12 times table?

Good 12 times table games make your child answer 12s facts again and again while something fun happens. On this page, free MathHero games such as Slime Battle, Wacky Racing and Delivery Service use only 12 times table questions, from 12 × 1 to 12 × 12. They play in the browser with no account, no download and no ads.

How do the MathHero 12 times table games work?

Each MathHero game on this page plays in its own way, and every one is a short adventure with several levels. In all of them, the questions are 12 times table facts from 12 × 1 to 12 × 12, and the other way around, like 7 × 12. Your child taps one of the answers, and every right answer moves the adventure forward.

How can my child practice the 12 times table?

Split each fact into the 10s and the 2s: 12 × 7 = 10 × 7 + 2 × 7 = 70 + 14 = 84. Doubling works too, because 12 is double 6: 6 × 8 = 48, so 12 × 8 = 96. Spend extra time on 12 × 7, 12 × 8, 12 × 9, 12 × 11 and 12 × 12, a little most days. The MathHero games on this page give quick, repeated practice on 12 × 1 to 12 × 12.

What grade learns the 12 times table?

Common Core standard 3.OA.C.7 expects US children to know the one-digit multiplication facts, up to 9 × 9, by the end of grade 3, so the 12s are an extra that some classes add in grades 3-4, usually at ages 8-10. In England, the 12 times table is a Year 4 objective and part of the multiplication tables check. The MathHero games on this page practice 12 × 1 to 12 × 12.

Are MathHero's 12 times table games free?

Yes. The MathHero 12 times table games on this page are free to play in your browser, with no account, no download and no ads. The MathHero app is a separate, fuller game: it is free at 5 levels a day, and a subscription with a 7-day free trial removes the daily limit.

Do the 12 times table games work on a tablet or phone?

Yes. The MathHero 12 times table games run in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. On a phone, tapping an adventure opens it full screen; turn the phone sideways to play. Your child answers by tapping one of the choices, so no keyboard is needed. The games need an internet connection to load.

Can my child practice only the 6s and 12s?

On this page, every question is a 12 times table fact. To mix tables, open the multiplication games and pick the tables before the first level, for example only ×6 and ×12. In the MathHero app, Custom Practice does the same from ×1 to ×12 and adds typed answers or multiple choice, with settings for each child.

How long should kids practice the 12 times table each day?

Short, regular practice works best for times tables: about 10-15 minutes on most days beats one long session a week. A round of a MathHero 12 times table game fits that well. Stop while your child still wants to play, and come back to the facts they missed the next day.
